COMMUNITY OUTREACH COORDINATOR

The Center for Anti-Violence Education ( CAE ) is a multi-racial, intergenerational, community-based, not-for-profit organization that develops and implements violence prevention programs. CAE ’s holistic programs help women, teens, children, LGBT individuals, and other communities especially affected by violence to build skills, heal from past abuse, and organize to counter the destructiveness of violence. CAE brings a commitment to fighting racism, sexism & gender oppression to all its activities. Founded in 1974, CAE is a pioneer in violence prevention programming, and has been recognized nationally and locally for its groundbreaking anti-violence work.

POSITION:

CAE seeks a highly motivated fall/winter intern to foster awareness of our programming in the community and to represent our organization at special events. The Public Ally Intern will work closely with the Administrator, and also provide basic office support. The intern will work flexible hours during the week and occasional weekends.

While the position is unpaid, it presents an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to work strategically in the community, expanding public awareness of CAE. You won’t be making coffee or running errands all day. As CAE’s Public Ally Intern you will learn about the operations of a successful not-for-profit organization in a direct, hands-on manner. You will work with dedicated, diverse staff in a fun and supportive environment. And you will have a real impact on the lives of women, teens, children, LGBT individuals and other people especially affected by violence.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Outreach:

• Coordinate and engage in outreach activities, including researching new organizations for CAE to contact, developing relationships with organizations in the community, conducting mailings, doing phone follow-up and distributing flyers.
• Assist in development of new outreach methods
• Manage outreach volunteers.

Special events:

• Represent CAE at various community events.
• Prepare materials for events, such as flyers, brochures, mailing lists, etc.

Administrative Duties:

• Data entry to assist in upgrading our donor database (approx 2-3 hours/week).
• Organize office supplies, make copies, and send faxes when necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

• An ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively with staff and volunteers, and with people of diverse backgrounds.
• An ability to be outgoing, friendly and represent the organization to many different types of people.
• Strong attention to detail.
• An ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize work and meet deadlines.
• Proficiency with database software and Microsoft applications: Excel, Outlook and Word are a plus.
• A commitment to social justice and CAE’s mission and goals.
• An understanding of complex issues affecting women, people of color & LGBT communities helpful. Familiarity with issues for survivors of violence preferred/a plus.

SALARY
This is an unpaid internship.
College credit is available.
Complimentary participation in our Self Defense course is available.
