During July & August of 2004, CAE conducted three Effective Action and Safety during the Republican National Convention. These workshops were for activists interested in finding their power and keeping themselves safe in protesting the RNC. The workshops explored and addressed the vital need for focused and organized education of protesters facing possible arrest or engaging in civil disobedience or direct action as a method of political dissent. The first was held in Brooklyn at the end of July; the second at a location in Manhattan at the beginning of August; and the third in late August immediately prior to the RNC, accessible to activists from across the country convening in New York City, also in Manhattan.

CAE is planning for 30-40 activists each session, with a total of at least 120 activists trained, and anticipate that the core of this training will reach hundreds more as training participants subsequently engage in intensive anti-RNC organizing and skill-sharing occurring throughout the city. Priority in recruitment and attendance will be given to people of color, youth, women, and LGBT individuals. The Manhattan training will specifically be accessible to people with differing abilities.
