Brooklyn Women's Martial Arts is one of the
oldest women’s Martial Arts schools
in the country. Founded in 1974, BWMA celebrated
its 30th anniversary in 2004.
Karate builds fighting skills and fighting
spirit. You do not have to be an athlete;
women begin karate training at all ages and
levels of fitness. If you are already an athlete,
karate will challenge your body and build
your spirit. At BWMA, students are encouraged
to work at their own pace and to push beyond
their former limits.
In 2004, CAE's staff and board passed a new
transgender policy,
thereby opening our traditionally women-only
course to transgender people.
At CAE, we teach an Okinawan style of karate
called Goju that emphasizes "hard"
direct strikes and "soft" open-handed
techniques that draw their speed and power
from your internal energy.

Annie Ellman is the co-founder
and head instructor of BWMA. She has taught
self-defense and karate since 1972. In addition,
Annie has studied and taught arnis (a Phillippine
martial art), tai chi chuan,
and qi gong. She has trained over 200 people
to teach self-defense and karate and has developed
courses to meet the self-defense needs of
women, children, teens, lesbians, seniors,
people with disabilities, and mothers. Other
instructors are women & trans- martial
artists trained in Goju karate and self-defense
who are qualifed through a formal teacher-training
program.
CAE offers this course on a sliding scale
(based on income). The course can be anywhere
from $30/month to $110/month at the highest.
To determine your particular fee you can call
our office between 10 AM and 6 PM. (718) 788-1775.
Survivors of relationship/domestic violence,
sexual assault, or childhood abuse can receive
one month of karate for free.

"Training at BWMA helped to radically
change my life. I now accept my body and often
feel strong in it. I feel I can successfully
meet many challenges that I once would have
been afraid to even consider."

This course is open to all women & transgender
people. Free childcare is available to all
students. Students are diverse in age, body
type, background and ability. With prior notice,
we are able to give added attention in class
to students with varying abilities. Unfortunately,
we are on the second floor and our space is
not handicapped-accessible.
The best way to know if this course is right
for you is to see it for yourself. Drop by
during training hours (see below) to watch
a class and talk with the instructors.

Beginning and mixed level karate students
can train at these times:
Mondays from 6 PM - 7:30 PM
